Maranacook Lake has a surface area of about 1,673 acres and is 118 feet at its deepest point. The Maranacook Lake Association (MLA) has the mission "to protect and improve the water quality of Maranacook Lake and its watershed for the benefit of all." One of the association's concerns is invasive plant species. To this end, a Youth Plant Patrol (YPP) was formed several years ago. Cameron Dufour, an intern from the University of Maine, Fort Kent, who worked with the YPP on Maranacook Lake said, "In conducting the plant surveys, national car rent the lakes get a yearly check to make sure that they are still invasive-free. If they do fall victim to an invasive plant, early detection can be vital in limiting the spread. The Youth Plant Patrol provides a critical check and information about the lakes, national car rent and allows trained eyes to watch over our lakes."
