If you are in New York City or someplace like Cape Cod, finding a one day rental could be difficult. Finding one anywhere else, especially if you are willing to go to the airport for pickup, it should not be.
I can't imagine it would be a problem anywhere, but especially nyc car rental not for the reason given. I am totally amazed at the rate Rastaguy quoted. I think it will be in the neighborhood of a hundred dollars!!
Every car rental agency rents for a day, but not all will allow you to drop off after 6pm because they aren't open, particularly if you are renting away from an airport. But that should pose absolutely no problems for you.
ZIP car is a particularly bad idea for the casual renter who already owns a car. First, it requires a monthly membership nyc car rental fee. Second, its hourly rates are expensive and are priced for someone to borrow a car for 2 or 3 hours, not a whole day. If Zipcar operated in Missouri, which is does not except at UMKC (an unlikely spot for the OP to be wanting to rent a car), it would cost as much to rent a car for a day as it does in Midtown Manhattan. THe poster can get a Priceline or Hotwire rental for a quarter of that in all likelihood.
