Two highly touted prospects were called up in the American League this week but I am not quite ready to take the plunge on them. The Detroit Tigers brought back starting pitcher Jacob Turner to the major leagues, after he posted a 3.43 ERA in Triple-A with 27 strikeouts in 42 innings of work with a .227 batting average against. He allowed only one run in five innings against St. Louis but allowed four hits and five walks and I don t think he is quite ready to perform at a high fantasy level just yet.
In Oakland, williams travel centers catcher Derek Norris was promoted from Triple-A yesterday, but his fantasy value for 2012 is going to be limited until the team moves catcher Kurt Suzuki. Norris was batting .273 in 209 at bats with eight home runs and 36 RBI plus five stolen bases. He was acquired this past December from the Washington Nationals in the deal for Gio Gonzalez and was a 4th round pick in the 2007 draft.
williams travel centers SP Chris Archer (TB) was promoted from Triple-A to replace Jeremy Hellickson who was placed on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue. williams travel centers Archer fared well in his first start with one earned run allowed in six innings with seven strikeouts. More importantly though for those that have been following him in the minor leagues is he allowed just one walk. While he should be good for strikeouts, his ERA and WHIP could be up and down depending on his control, as he had walked 45 in 76 2/3 innings at Triple-A.
williams travel centers SP - Franklin Morales (BOS) Morales was moved from the bullpen to the rotation on Sunday when Josh Beckett was placed on the disabled list. He turned in a solid outing against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs in five innings and striking out nine. Considering it was his first start since the 2009 season, it was a pretty good one, but his stay in the rotation is likely a short-term solution. He starts again against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
RP Glen Perkins (MIN) closer Matt Capps is out with a sore shoulder making Perkins a worthy claim in case Capps has to miss a long period of time. Perkins picked up saves back-to-back nights and there is also a good chance that Capps gets moved at the trade deadline making Perkins a more attractive target.
SP Bret Cecil (TOR) with a rash of injuries suffered by the Toronto Blue Jays rotation, Cecil was promoted from Triple-A where he had just made one start, allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts after moving up from AA. In his first major league start of the season, Cecil allowed two runs in five innings with five strikeouts to pick up a win against the Philadelphia Phillies.
OF Ryan Kalish (BOS) Kalish has missed a good portion of the 2012 season recovering from shoulder surgery and just made his way back to the major leagues this week. Between three minor league levels, he was hitting .345 with five home runs and 11 RBI in 58 at bats and four stolen bases. He is a decent source of power and speed for those looking for a 5th outfielder in AL-only formats.
2B/3B Luis Valbuena (CHC) has filled in at third base for Ian Stewart who was placed on the disabled list and is a cheap source of power, but a drain on the batting average. Valbuena has hit two home runs in his seven games with the Cubs, but he carries a career major league batting average of .226 in 758 at bats. He played 11 games at second base last season and has played seven at third base in 2012 so depending on your league rules, he may qualify at a couple of positions.
2B/3B Chris Nelson (COL) the injury to Troy Tulowitzki and the move of Marco Scutaro to shortstop created a hole at second base that Nelson has stepped into. His numbers are on a pretty similar course to what he did last season with a batting average of around .250 and the ability to hit 10-12 home runs over the course of a full season.
