The city of Phoenix is a large city of about 6.5 million people, but it had humble beginnings as a small western town. Some of these old buildings are still standing. According to Arizona Haunted Sites Examiner Debe Branning, the ghost of Leone Jensen has been seen roaming the hallways of the old hotel. Charles Harris and Dwight D. Heard who purchased the property from the Babbitts began construction of the hotel in 1927. This was a state of the art hotel with air conditioning (the first in Phoenix), elevators, circulating chilled water in the rooms and steam heat. The hotel s grand opening was on March 19, 1928. This is where the Hollywood elite would come when visiting Phoenix. Celebraties like Mae West, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Marilyn Monroe and Gene Autry would be staying at the San Carlos Hotel.

Another tale speaks of a woman who was shot and killed in the basement in the 1930's.
In 1919 Edward A Tovrea open a packing house in Phoenix at 48th street and Van Buren. The Tovrea Land and Cattle Company had grown to nearly 40,000 head of cattle. Known as world's largest feedlot , the Tovrea Land and Cattle Company had 200 acres of cattle pens. Edward s son Philip E Tovrea ran the empire after the death of his father.
In 1947 the Stockyards Restaurant began as a simple 35 seat coffee counter serving the cattlemen who came to do business with Tovrea there in the administration offices. A fire in 1953 destroyed that building.
In 1954, a larger two story structure was built on the property which included a large restaurant and bar. Philip s wife, Helen G Tovrea was involved with decorating the new establishment. She commissioned artist Katherine Patton to paint murals in the Saloon and Rose Banquet Room during the 1950s.

In 1954 Leonard F Monti purchased the property and started his own restaurant. Since then there have been numerous ghost sightings at Monti's La Casa Vieja. A paranormal investigation conducted at the restaurant revealed multiple impressions of ghosts in various rooms.
