It all started in 1984 at a fish fry on the lawn of the White House. I was assigned to photograph Barbara Bush for a High Profile cheap hotels barcelona cover that would run during cheap hotels barcelona the Republican Convention in August. I photographed the future First Lady with her dog in the Vice President's home, Admiral's House in Washington, D.C. The next day Mrs. Bush invited me to a fish fry, where I met her son, future President George W. Bush, for the first time.
Four years later I photographed President Reagan at the Mesquite Rodeo when he was campaigning for George H. Bush, who was running for President. Once again George W. was with his dad and I was able to visit with him again.
In 1989, I was covering the inauguration for newly-elected President Bush. During the ceremony I saw George W. Bush sitting with his family with Jenna on his lap and her twin sister, Barbara teasing her. I was shooting with a 600mm lens with a 1.4 converter and I could not believe what I was shooting. They would continue teasing one another until he separated them. Outgoing President Reagan was sitting two rows in front of him.

cheap hotels barcelona I would see George W. at Texas Rangers baseball games and give him prints of photos I took the previous times I was with him and his father. George and Laura loved the prints and our relationship cheap hotels barcelona grew over the years.
When Houston was announced as the home for the National Republican Convention in 1992, I was assigned to be one of several photographers to cover the four-day event. I would see the younger Bush more and more and one day I asked him if I could follow him during the convention. I wanted to get total access to him and his family, explaining to them that my coverage would be part of history.
He and Laura agreed and it was great to have exclusive access and beat the Houston Chronicle in their own backyard. I was very competitive, knowing if I could have the opportunity that I might earn the trust of the Bushes.

I remember him asking cheap hotels barcelona me if I wanted to go his father's suite to meet him, so he could tell his Dad I would be following the family during the convention. George W. knocked on the suite's door and as we walked in the President was behind his desk working on his acceptance speech.
We shook hands and I only shot five or six photographs, on film (this was pre-digital), using a flash because the curtains were closed. There was bulletproof glass behind him because his desk was in front of a window. The image ran on our front page the following day and several members of the Bush family and their staff said how much they liked it.
I would ride with them in the back of a big SUV in the motorcade to and from the Houstonian Hotel to the Convention, which was held in the Astrodome. George and Laura were sitting in front of me, talking about the convention and the upcoming election. At that point they knew they could trust me.
