We reported earlier travel to china that the folks at Common Machine Productions will present a sneak peek of their upcoming documentary, Plastic Paradise: A Swingin Trip Through America s Polynesian Obsession , during Hukilau 2012. But more details have been announced, including the exclusive showtime.
The sneak preview will be shown just before the first dinner show at The Mai-Kai on Saturday, April 21, and will begin promptly at 5 p.m. You must have dinner show reservations to see the film. We ve heard it s more than just a short clip so you won t want to skip this opportunity. The documentary, which will hit the film festival circuit later this year before being shown on PBS in 2013, tells the story of Tiki culture s original rise and fall, and its subsequent rediscovery by a new generation of Polynesian Popsters. Filmed in Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale — much of it on location at The Mai-Kai during Hukilau 2011 — Plastic Paradise features interviews with many of the Tiki scene s creative forces, such as Sven Kirsten, Beachbum Berry, Tiki Kiliki, Otto von Stroheim, Swanky, Shag, and many more.
Acclaimed artist and designer Kevin Kidney is the film s art director. Filmmakers Brett O Bourke and Gaspar González of Common Machine will host the screening, travel to china discuss the film, and take questions from the audience afterward. Click here for a short preview .

Inspired equally by historic Polynesian travel to china Pop and the modern Tiki renaissance, Jim "Hurricane" Hayward aims to use his acumen from 20-plus years of independent concert promotion and 30-plus years in journalism to bring a greater travel to china awareness and appreciation to the vast ocean of Tiki culture and its many tributaries. Since the early '90s, his Slammie Productions has presented live shows featuring hundreds of indie artists: Agent Orange, Dick Dale, The Nekromantix, Exene Cervenka, The HorrorPops, The Phenomenauts and many more. Now, he's launching The Atomic Grog as a vehicle to promote Tiki culture and its music, art and cocktail scenes.
A lifelong student of mid-century pop culture, travel to china Jim solidified his appreciation for the Atomic Era in his childhood in the 1960s. His father promoted custom car shows featuring George Barris classics such as the Batmobile and "Munsters" cars and his earliest memories of Tiki come from visits to some of the era's vintage restaurants. In the mid '70s, his family settled in the Sunshine State, travel to china where he graduated from the University travel to china of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications. He has spent more than 30 years toiling at several of the state's major daily newspapers as a writer, editor and for the past 15 years as a Web producer.
