Potential economic development hotel oasis cancun is on the way to the Valley with plans to build two hotels, one in Salem and one in Boardman. For Salem, which on Wednesday hosted Vice President Joe Biden, it's an opportunity the city has not had since Timberlanes closed in January 2009. Yes, we've been waiting for several years now for a developer to come in. We're pretty excited about the prospect, said Salem Mayor John Berlin. A developer is planning to build a Holiday Inn Express, which Berlin said will give the city a much-needed economic hotel oasis cancun boost. When something like this does take place, usually some other businesses decide that it's time to move in, and of course restaurants are one of the other things that usually come with this type of accommodations, Berlin said. The proposed 70-room hotel would be located near Bentley and Cunningham roads. Berlin said the area is ideal to build because the infrastructure is already in place, including roads, sewers and water lines. The hotel also would create 25 jobs, and fill the void of not having a hotel in Salem. The closest place to have accommodations is in Columbiana. We're looking forward to having something here in town, Berlin said. The city has been working with developer Rodney Herron, who has partnered with an unnamed developer from Pittsburgh who has developed other Holiday Inn Express locations. But Salem isn't the only area that could see a new hotel. A Best Western Plus could be popping up in Boardman, across from the Springfield Grille on Tiffany Boulevard. Plus is more toward the business and more toward new technology, said hotel developer Ash Kochhar. The 75-room hotel would create 20 jobs and would be the developer's third hotel. He runs the Best Western hotel oasis cancun in Hubbard and the Super 8 in West Middlesex. We're going to close on our land pretty soon, in a few weeks, Kochhar said. Both proposed hotels still need to go through zoning boards before construction can start. If everything gets approved in Salem, the developer told the mayor it wouldn't take long to build the hotel, hotel oasis cancun which could be complete by October. The Best Western Plus likely would not open until next spring.
